Presentation script

Slide one

Good morning/ afternoon everybody , respected industry works , aspiring photographers .My name is sally Jenkins and I have chosen the editorial side to this project I hope you all like my presentation.

Slide two

Throughout this 6 week brief Its safe to say I have learnt a huge amount about editorial photography both commissioned and stock. There have been many aspects of the industry that I have reaserched including ...

Slide three

Where editorial photography is used , What type of editorial photography there is ,How to get into editorial photography, The value of a photographers time and general surviving as a freelance editorial photographer.

Slide four

In this 6 minute 40second presentation based in the Japanese pecha kucha format I would love to tell you all, all my finding but I’m afraid I only have time to talk about one aspect I have learnt about

Slide five

Today I would like to talk to you all about my research and findings about how to get into the editorial industry using information I have gathered from other working photographers.

Slide six

The editorial Market is a vast one with images featuring almost everywhere you look from regional news papers to national fashion magazines even to the leaflets pushed through you door

Slide seven

So firstly to begin you career into editorial photography its always useful to pick a goal and stick to it. Define yourself as a specific photographer and base you portfolio and CVs around that specialism

Slide eight

Not everyone to begin with have an established relationship with possible editorial clients. From my finding I have learn it is useful to build strong relationships weather that be offering free time as a student or asking to join in the experience by offering to assist even the assistant.

Slide nine

Chris Goodney a new York based editorial photographer started out contacting editors the old fashioned way through mast heads but he is a solid reason why building relationships in the industry is a more successful way in. He write ‘I think establishing a good relationship with your editor is a priceless thing. It really does come down to who you know and how good your work is plain and simple.’

Slide ten

Another way to edge into the editorial photography industry is to organise meetings in person and repeat doing this until your name becomes circulated. Photographers and editors alike talk and swap names to get the best person for the job. Even though these meetings are becoming more difficult to organise some photographers feel it is a more personal way to present their trade.

Slide eleven

During this project the editorial group have been given timed briefs that we might face in the industry. We were given two weeks to complete one of the four briefs options set. I chose to do the spring fashion brief. I thought doing a fashion brief would be a pleasant challenge and a good excuse to read lots of magazines for research. I started with printed reaserch , finding a current trend , styling then obviously the shoot itself.

Slide twelve

Here is the image I chose to present as my final piece. The mirrored leg of the dog and model also the models expression make the image humorous whilst showcasing the clothes as planned. My main bulk of reference research came from a series in Marie Claire magazine April 2013 edition. This is where I have planned my shoot to fit.

Slide thirteen

Before doing this project I would have no idea how to contact a editor but as the above previous quotes show I now know how to approach it . Firstly I can just open the magazine and look for the master head. Skip through the first 10 pages of solid advertisements and there it is. Why had I never noticed this page before ? Anyway right at the top under the title it says Editorial followed by a phone number and email address.

Slide fourteen

Also with the magic of Google just type in contact then the magazine name then editorial and it just comes up Really easily. So there really is no excuse not to get work out there circulating. Sending portfolios is so simple and from the research I have undertaken an effective way of getting into the industry. It also pays handsomely, you can charge £800 a day to work with a higher budget client or more demanding client so I have also found it usefull to know the recommended rate for different editorials. All these can be found on LondonFreelance.org

Slide fifteen

As well as doing the spring fashion brief we were also set another brief that had to be planned , executed and finished products printing and on David’s desk in just seven days! This is not a great amount of time for the things that have to be planned like developing concept, finding model , Finding time to suit model , adjustments for weather , shooting editing and printing but I managed. The brief was to photograph a leisure sports person and find editorial content in which they would fit. I started looking in to smaller specialist magazines that the sport I chose would fit in more comfortably.

Slide sixteen

We had to take two images one a portrait of our chosen subject as you can see here and another of an detail shoot telling the viewer more about the sport. I chose to do my images on the urban sport of tricking which is a mix of flips , kicks martial arts and other stuff I couldn’t possible do. Here I chose to do an unconventional to portray an unconventional sport.

Slide seventeen

After taking the images I thought it would be important to see there worth. They would be published in a smaller budget specialist magazine as I don’t see the sport making national news anytime soon. Obviously this shoot is pretend commissioned so the fees are as follows I shot for half a day meaning that shoot should have earn me £175.00. I know in this presentation I’m flying numbers around abit but the financial side to photography has become new to me recently and I find it fascinating.

Slide eighteen

Another way to get your work into the market is through stock photography. Although generally it pays roughly half of what commissioned does it can be used a multiple amount of times maybe leading to constant income. Stock imaging are images that you have already taken and businesses can pay to use them in their publications. The beauty about stock photography is that once the picture has been taken it can be used multiple times by multiple editors generating multiple payments.

Slide nineteen

For example the recommended pricing for commission vs. Stock photography are as follows. IF you are working for a largely circulated glossy magazine and they had book you for a day you should be charging anywhere between £500 and £800 for your time. This would give them the right to use any of your images in any way they like aka. Front cover, double page spread ect.  However if a stock photograph was bought to use on a front cover the standard rate of pay would be £480 and if another company would like to use the same image for a different publication as just a half page piece the standard rate of pay would be £140 so you can quickly start to see the positives to stock photography.

Slide twenty

As a student photographer myself, it’s becoming time I started to think beyond the course and start thinking about my career as a photographer. I have experimented with different types of photography since my interest began but at least for next year I need to think about my specialism and what job what that will lead me into. Before partaking in this project I had vaguely known about editorial photography but now I would happily say I have build confidence and knowledge so if I wish to join the industry I would know how. Thank you for listening and hope you enjoyed my presentation.

Stage 3 - Spring Fashion

'By Tuesday 7th May You are to have shot work that responds to one of the following:
Food (Studio):
Keywords: Fruit & Veg – Light, Healthy, Fresh
Using weekly, monthly or in-house publications as your source of reference, and
concentrating exclusively on editorial content (rather than advertising), produce a single image in the studio that takes the keywords above as its inspiration.
Spring Fashion (Studio or Location):
One model, clothes appropriate to the season and a location appropriate to the label.
Using contemporary editorial fashion as your reference you are to produce one final image that responds to current trends in major regional or national publications. In doing this you must identify one publication as your target, in terms of audience and style.
Uniform (Studio):
McDonalds, Traffic Wardens, the Police and of course the armed services very different roles but each has it’s own unique uniform; we might also say there are stereotypical ‘characters’ we associate with each.
If you choose this brief you are to produce one to two portraits of a person in uniform.
The conditions of this shoot are: white background, full length.
With any of the studio assignments you can team-up with another member of the group, to plan together and assist each other, but you are each to produce a unique image and if working with people use a different person.
The Boss (Location, with Lighting):
Using the Broadsheets and weekly business press as your sources of reference produce a location portrait of a business manager or cultural leader. Light it with studio or off camera flash or reflectors and shoot on location.
Think about the role your sitter occupies within the professional world, your image will want to make a statement about that person’s significance/role.
Whichever option you choose there must be research evident on your blog, upon final submission, of research into editorial photography in the chosen discipline. As before, define and reflect upon who’s shooting it, which publications are commissioning it, what styles are being used?

After reading the brief and briefly brainstorming possible avenues in which to explore there was only one this week for me . The spring fashion brief! I have been waiting for a while to do a brief like this and I thought this the perfect opportunity to explore an area of photography that I have always been interested in.  Before starting university I did an art foundation course and specialised in fashion so I thought this would be a fun renewal for me. Tim walker has always been a massive inspiration for me I like how he challenges the imagination in creative extravagant landscapes, props and costumes for his fashion photography.

Like myself Tim walker is an ‘anti’ fashion photographer meaning it’s not precisely the fashion that inspires him/me but the endless possibilities of stuff to experiment with to showcase the trends. All previous shoots I have conducted have been little about the clothes and more about the location / props sp for this brief I would like to mix things up and switch my priorities. I know the brief states either studio or location but I am much more drawn to the location idea. I find putting models into location more challenging that studio because it can be un predicable which I find enjoyable. To my impression so far this editorial brief has been set to us to teach us about working as an editorial photographers and how to meet live briefs. If you have been commissioned for a week you need the end result in the time set regardless the conditions. Things such as weather, model availability equipment can be unreliable so you have to be able to think on your toes and improvise or just be extremely organised.

Well there’s only one real place to start with this project and that to find a spring fashion trend that I can focus on in my shoot I will be doing this through the use of fashion magazines and online fashion sites .
Printed reaserch
I have selected 3 magazines to begin to create my fashion trend and to build knolage about how the images are exicuted. I have looked at Marie Claire magazine from march and April although under the same title in the breif it said to adeer to one puplication. I have also used a H&M catalouge to see hoewdifferent publications (brands) use fashion photography.

Below is one of my favourite shoot i have seen within the magazinzes, i think it is reallt styalised and the images are well composed and crisp. I would like to do a shoot similar to this in the styling but i think i would much preffer to do it in colour
. I was highly supprised to see that out of all the images i have selected this is one of the small numbers which actually includes a photographers name. Fabio Chizzola.

As you may be able to tell i have found a current fashion trend that i have focused on. The 60s is all coming back! Now its time for me to find a appropriate clothing that fits the 60s/ modern look , find a model and start shooting !
Dottys Vintage
Dotty's vintage is an inspiring local business. She buys and sell vintage clothing in store and online. As i have already established i would like to focus on the current fashion trend of reliving the 60s weather that be mod or the short a line dresses. I know that i want me shoot to be in colour before i even find the clothing to photograph because to me what is spring without a little vivid colour?? I email the vintage shop (Dotty's) to organise a short meeting to talk about the prospect of borrowing a piece to photograph , i got the reply to just drop in whenever so that will be my mission this weekend.
I went into her shop with images that have inspired me and told her my idea and brief , she was more than happy to help and offered me to look around the shop and take an item of my choice under the conditions it was returned as taken (immaculate) and she could have a copy of the best images. I am always overwhelmed when shops are so generous as to help out local students and I'm guessing this is an online shout out, Thank you !
I have chosen a white 60s mini dress with orange and green shapes as a pattern.
Styleing and shooting
I have already got my main fashion piece the dress , i have choosen to style it with an bright huge pair of orange wedges to match the pattern on the dress and some sixtys inspired white frame sunglasses. I have choosen my model and now its just time to shoot. Its a beautiful day , i have my model , clothes and location ideas in mind. I have also chosen to add an added eliment to my images by adding a second model (well a little dog). In my work i like to see relationships behind the lens and i feel this will add an interesting element to my work. heres a quick shot i did of my model to show the styling before we went on location.

Possible edits for shoot
After the shoot i have conducted based around the clothes and subjects i have chosen here are some that i can critique. I would like to see these are a strong set of images that maybe would work better in a photo series rather than just a one image piece. Though out the shoot and again looking back on the images i find the relationship between the model and the dog very interesting and sometimes amusing.
Over all we have the dogs attention, the model is looking good , not to overly posed but still her eye contact is compelling.Small niggles are the for a fashion shoot the main focus has to be on the clothing so the black lead falling through the middle of the dress is distracting also you can see a section of the reflector i was using in the bottom right hand corner but this could be easily cropped out.
Here is one of the images that i am considering for my final images. its half candid half posed. The model looks comfortable and relaxed also both subjects are looking in the same direction. The human model is also dead centre of the compression which is pleasing on the eye now but might cause problems in printing. For example if it was to be printed as a double page spread you could lose detail from the binding. Also if i was to re shoot this image i would make sure the dogs feet are in i think it would finish the images nicely.

I Think in this image the model look professional but as its a fashion shoot and the attention should be about the features of the clothing i feel this images doesn't show case the dress as well as it should. Maybe in the same location i could just pan out slightly so that the bottom of the dress can be seen.

I think this image looks very British (thanks to catching the open top red bus) also  holiday feel. I feel i could have exaggerated the flower bed further and made them a focus rather than just a subtle background. This photograph could have been taken in the 60s because when the shoes arnt included there is no modern twist. If i was to go back and re shoot this image i would either use flash to fill in the and pick out more details on the models (and dogs) face or just use a reflector to throw back some natural light in.

This image would have been almost perfect if the dog had better stance also the levels of light on the models face are to bright so it bleaches out the models features. Also where she is stood isn't Central so the path isn't leading into the distance evenly so it would have to be cropped eliminating all the grass which adds nice colour to the image.

This image is another one fighting for top place, i would do a slight re edit because i don't think the tone of this image matched the rest. It needs warming slightly but other than that the compositions good and it has a real feel good vibe to it. Both subjects have a leg raised and the humans models expression are just great. I think this would fit well in an editorial printed format.

The model conducted this pose herself , she looks comfortable and confident which is always a successful part in fashion photography. It could do with a tighter crop just so the doors don't look as slanted as they look as it stands. The dog looks ace on this shoot and i think she just brings a pleasant bit of humour to each shot.

 My Final Image
Here is the choice for my final image for the spring fashion brief. I feel i have suitable sourced information regarding spring 2013 fashion trends i have also styled the model appropriately and executed a clean , sharp playful image that would fit well within a fashion magazine. I think it would fit well in most fashion magazines but if i was to show them as a series ( photo story) it would fit even better in publications such as Marie Claire and Vogue. I think this would benefit being printed as a full page piece in full colour.

Stage two - Leisure Sports person

'By this time next week you are to have shot work for one of the following:
How we Met:
It’s widely acknowledged that introducing a second or third person to a portrait shoot
can make the process either a whole lot easier or a whole lot more demanding.
Taking the Independent’s ‘How we Met’ as inspiration you are to make a portrait of two
people who know each other very well, who have a professional or personal bond –
don’t con us with your selection and don’t photograph your sister, brother, mother,
father or lover!
Of course, in your supporting work on your blog, you’ll need to show you’ve explored
editorial portraiture – every week there are 100s of commissioned portraits being shot
and across a range of publications, from broadsheet to specialist magazines. Who’s
shooting this work?
Shop Local
Produce a three-picture story of a small local shop, one with some character. Of the
three images, one must be a portrait of the owner; at least one must be landscape
(wide) and one portrait format (tall). The accompanying shots must reinforce the nature
of the shop.
In your supporting work you’ll need to show you’ve explored editorial features – what
range of subjects are being covered, who publishes this work, does some of it fit with
your own interests?
Leisure
Produce a portrait of a sportsperson, accompanied by one additional detail shot that
reinforces their ‘sport’. Your definition of sportsperson can be wide; it might be a
Mountain-biker, Archer, Gymnast or even Hiker.
Use the location to help emphasise the activity and the same with the detail but also
make this an image that is photographically interesting/intriguing.
What titles sports and leisure titles are there?

Well this brief is an interesting one ! By first glances this brief is clearly set out to challenge us with working with different people, in unfamiliar environments and working to a time frame . Exactly what editorial is about. An opportunity to photograph something that maybe in the past haven't had the guts to explore. Being a photography student i understand the guts it take to ask people for there portrait because most people are no co-operative also theres something about holding a camera up that changes peoples comfort zones and part of the challenge to relax your subject. If i am to set myself a personal target for this brief it will be to improve my communication skills with potential clients and help them feel more relaxed towards me and my camera.

I have chosen to look into the leisure(sport mans) part of the brief for many reasons. Shop local struck me at first but i have done a similar project before involving a certain street in morecambe doing the same thing so i have already set my bar and i would like to challenge myself. How we meet is also a good brief but i think after the previous portrait of an anarchist brief i would like to try something completely different. Although nobody in direct family to me are 'leisure sportsman' unless Friday nights pints is a sport i do have extended family , work colleagues , friends and also friends of friends who do sport in there free time. I also think that a sports person will be more compelled to let you take more creative images and be more comfortable because it is a hobby slash passion of theirs that they might want to document.

It has been a weigh up between two sports and two different models. I have had the choice between a friend of a friend called Kieran who's hobby is to Trick or a family friends daughter who does CaniCRoss at weekends. Both very un traditional sports that could make an interesting artical topic and hasn't been over done photography wise. Both sports are not in the main media daily and are both interesting to watch. After much debate and time tabling to see which model could find the time that week i have decided to go for the sport Tricking knowing that i had a local model at hand this week and he is wanting shoots for his publications portfolio so we can be doing each other a favour. I have watched my model trick before and i think this is going to be a really interesting shoot to conduct. I want my images to portray the sport.
Urban Dictionary Definition
1.tricking

a kind of extreme sport where the "athletes" do cool, fast, beautiful flips and kicks without any wires or trampolines

2.Tricking

A form of acrobatics where practitioners focus mainly on linking together chains of acrobatic kicks, flips and twists in combinations, or combos. Trickers train and can be found in many locations, including fields, Martial Arts dojos, Gymnastics gyms, and even public locales. People who trick are known as Trickers or Tricksters.

3. Tricking

The Combination of Any Martial art,Gymnastics and Breakdancing-The Combination of These 3 Elements Creates a Artistic Lifestyle Known As "Tricking".

Tricking Is Known As The highest Level of Martial Arts,For many reasons,Not only are The three outlets strong in-Themselves But Combinding Them Makes an Artistic Desplay of talent Like NO other, Tricking Is Becoming Very Popular in todays Society,You can Do Tricking anywhere and Anytime By anyone That is fit and Athletic,

Tricking Photography
Here are some tricking photographs that i have found on line which have really inspired me the problem is iv searched ever where and cant get any information on the photographer, i cant even find i real name , The only information available is that its called martial arts series taken in 2009 by an online blogger who calls himself djswim. Not only is the backdrop stunning and visually appealing but also the lighting on the subject and the positioning on the subject is perfect in each shot. These images would fit suitably in an editorial lay out weather that be print, online or screen based. I could see these publications in both traditional new print publications or maybe an extreme sports magazine.

Reaserch into the sport
I have chosen before composing my shoot that it might be important for me to get a little more knowledge and understanding about the sport in order to catch it how it would be desired. Although parkour and more urban sports are becoming more popular and main stream Tricking is on iv heard very little about before meeting my model Kieran. From the brief chat me and him have had about the sport its like an urban gymnastic mixed with Martial arts and performance. Its a highly difficult sport to partake but often is it self tough which i find amazing. A poor wo/mans Gymnastics maybe? does this sport support a certain class of people in Britain today and should it be vastly documented because most of the research i have done so far there really isn't to much information on it. Maybe iv found an interesting niche in the market for editorial photography ? My model has advised me  to research and view 'tricking samplers' on youtube. Tricking samplers are a way of the trickers self promoting themselves and showcasing there skills through the use of video often they are very creative and take months to put together.
Here are a few i have studied online for inspiration for my still shoots maybe this is something the Tricking industry is missing STILLS.

The sport of tricking has exploded all over youtube but seems a mystery to the rest of the world . The shoot i will be conducting will be a real life version of the sport and possible publications it could be viewed in are straight traditional newspaper such as the Guardian ect for awareness of the sport and the kind of people that partake.
Sports Editorials images i am using for inspiration and referencing
I have taken a selected few images from both the sun news paper and the the daily mailAll are sports related , relating the the breif and there is a mix of portraits and additional shots (Action). I have perposly chosen a variety of sports to depict if there are different style in the photography aswell as the sport.

Aims and objective for shoot
I have many aims for this shoot as well as the point i have made above about making my subject more comfortable in front of the camera i also would like to capture the spirit of the sports hence the research and video watching i have done about the sport. When meeting with my model to discuss the shoot one thing that was apparent was that he almost sees the sport as a life style rather than just a hobby. I want to capture its urban roots and the lack of professional training, or finance going into the sport.
Possible edits
Here below i have added a fer images from the shoot to critique and explore further. Some good ones some bad ones.
I like the composition of the image, the statue bird in the background can be symbolic to the essence of the sport also the fact that the bird is on a bricked shed type thing enhances the urban aspect to the sport. Unfortunately though the model still looks uncomfortable maybe due to the cold weather conditions or the fact he was topless in public but i wanted to catch the tattoo on his chest related to the sport, showing the models dedication.

This is by far my favourite portrait. Whilst shooting i wasn't feeling the traditional portrait so iv tryed to create an unconventional portrait to mirror the unconventional sport. I think i will edit this image slightly for the finish piece and maybe try making it black and white in photo shop. I feel black and white will compliment the image and give it its much deserve edgy look it may also help the image become more urban and gritty. Also i feel this is a good angle to show case the models tattoo and also his athletic body.

I like how iv captured his movement and the fact that i have snapped it leaving no trail of movement it give the image a surreal feel. The composition isn't the best but the image would work alot better if the subject was higher maybe so i looked as if he was over the building. This would enhance the extremity of the sport with clever camera tricks.

Well when it comes to the additional image i have tryed to achieve capturing the movement of the sport and for my final image i think its defiantly a toss up between this image and the one below. Although i like the models positioning better on the shot below this image has more height, compliments the horizon line more and looks more natural but still has the urban, gritty shocking appeal that i desired.

Great body posture from the model but the way the image has been composed makes it look as though the subject is doing a headstand on the building below which is humorous but not the urban extreme angle i was trying to achieve.
