Food (Studio):
Keywords: Fruit & Veg – Light, Healthy, Fresh
Using weekly, monthly or in-house publications as your source of reference, and
concentrating exclusively on editorial content (rather than advertising), produce a single image in the studio that takes the keywords above as its inspiration.
Spring Fashion (Studio or Location):
One model, clothes appropriate to the season and a location appropriate to the label.
Using contemporary editorial fashion as your reference you are to produce one final image that responds to current trends in major regional or national publications. In doing this you must identify one publication as your target, in terms of audience and style.Uniform (Studio):
McDonalds, Traffic Wardens, the Police and of course the armed services very different roles but each has it’s own unique uniform; we might also say there are stereotypical ‘characters’ we associate with each.
If you choose this brief you are to produce one to two portraits of a person in uniform.
The conditions of this shoot are: white background, full length.
With any of the studio assignments you can team-up with another member of the group, to plan together and assist each other, but you are each to produce a unique image and if working with people use a different person.
The Boss (Location, with Lighting):
Using the Broadsheets and weekly business press as your sources of reference produce a location portrait of a business manager or cultural leader. Light it with studio or off camera flash or reflectors and shoot on location.
Think about the role your sitter occupies within the professional world, your image will want to make a statement about that person’s significance/role.
Whichever option you choose there must be research evident on your blog, upon final submission, of research into editorial photography in the chosen discipline. As before, define and reflect upon who’s shooting it, which publications are commissioning it, what styles are being used?
Like myself Tim
walker is an ‘anti’ fashion photographer meaning it’s not precisely the fashion
that inspires him/me but the endless possibilities of stuff to experiment with
to showcase the trends. All previous shoots I have conducted have been little
about the clothes and more about the location / props sp for this brief I would
like to mix things up and switch my priorities. I know the brief states either
studio or location but I am much more drawn to the location idea. I find
putting models into location more challenging that studio because it can be un
predicable which I find enjoyable. To my impression so far this editorial brief
has been set to us to teach us about working as an editorial photographers and
how to meet live briefs. If you have been commissioned for a week you need the
end result in the time set regardless the conditions. Things such as weather,
model availability equipment can be unreliable so you have to be able to think
on your toes and improvise or just be extremely organised.
Printed reaserch
I have selected 3 magazines to begin to create my fashion trend and to build knolage about how the images are exicuted. I have looked at Marie Claire magazine from march and April although under the same title in the breif it said to adeer to one puplication. I have also used a H&M catalouge to see hoewdifferent publications (brands) use fashion photography.

Below is one of my favourite shoot i have seen within the magazinzes, i think it is reallt styalised and the images are well composed and crisp. I would like to do a shoot similar to this in the styling but i think i would much preffer to do it in colour
. I was highly supprised to see that out of all the images i have selected this is one of the small numbers which actually includes a photographers name. Fabio Chizzola.H&M magazine spring 2013

As you may be able to tell i have found a current fashion trend that i have focused on. The 60s is all coming back! Now its time for me to find a appropriate clothing that fits the 60s/ modern look , find a model and start shooting !
Dottys Vintage
Dotty's vintage is an inspiring local business. She buys and sell vintage clothing in store and online. As i have already established i would like to focus on the current fashion trend of reliving the 60s weather that be mod or the short a line dresses. I know that i want me shoot to be in colour before i even find the clothing to photograph because to me what is spring without a little vivid colour?? I email the vintage shop (Dotty's) to organise a short meeting to talk about the prospect of borrowing a piece to photograph , i got the reply to just drop in whenever so that will be my mission this weekend.
I went into her shop with images that have inspired me and told her my idea and brief , she was more than happy to help and offered me to look around the shop and take an item of my choice under the conditions it was returned as taken (immaculate) and she could have a copy of the best images. I am always overwhelmed when shops are so generous as to help out local students and I'm guessing this is an online shout out, Thank you !
I have chosen a white 60s mini dress with orange and green shapes as a pattern.
Styleing and shooting
I have already got my main fashion piece the dress , i have choosen to style it with an bright huge pair of orange wedges to match the pattern on the dress and some sixtys inspired white frame sunglasses. I have choosen my model and now its just time to shoot. Its a beautiful day , i have my model , clothes and location ideas in mind. I have also chosen to add an added eliment to my images by adding a second model (well a little dog). In my work i like to see relationships behind the lens and i feel this will add an interesting element to my work. heres a quick shot i did of my model to show the styling before we went on location.
Possible edits for shoot
After the shoot i have conducted based around the clothes and subjects i have chosen here are some that i can critique. I would like to see these are a strong set of images that maybe would work better in a photo series rather than just a one image piece. Though out the shoot and again looking back on the images i find the relationship between the model and the dog very interesting and sometimes amusing.

Over all we have the dogs attention, the model is looking good , not to overly posed but still her eye contact is compelling.Small niggles are the for a fashion shoot the main focus has to be on the clothing so the black lead falling through the middle of the dress is distracting also you can see a section of the reflector i was using in the bottom right hand corner but this could be easily cropped out.
Here is one of the images that i am considering for my final images. its half candid half posed. The model looks comfortable and relaxed also both subjects are looking in the same direction. The human model is also dead centre of the compression which is pleasing on the eye now but might cause problems in printing. For example if it was to be printed as a double page spread you could lose detail from the binding. Also if i was to re shoot this image i would make sure the dogs feet are in i think it would finish the images nicely.
I Think in this image the model look professional but as its a fashion shoot and the attention should be about the features of the clothing i feel this images doesn't show case the dress as well as it should. Maybe in the same location i could just pan out slightly so that the bottom of the dress can be seen.
I think this image looks very British (thanks to catching the open top red bus) also holiday feel. I feel i could have exaggerated the flower bed further and made them a focus rather than just a subtle background. This photograph could have been taken in the 60s because when the shoes arnt included there is no modern twist. If i was to go back and re shoot this image i would either use flash to fill in the and pick out more details on the models (and dogs) face or just use a reflector to throw back some natural light in.
This image would have been almost perfect if the dog had better stance also the levels of light on the models face are to bright so it bleaches out the models features. Also where she is stood isn't Central so the path isn't leading into the distance evenly so it would have to be cropped eliminating all the grass which adds nice colour to the image.
This image is another one fighting for top place, i would do a slight re edit because i don't think the tone of this image matched the rest. It needs warming slightly but other than that the compositions good and it has a real feel good vibe to it. Both subjects have a leg raised and the humans models expression are just great. I think this would fit well in an editorial printed format.
The model conducted this pose herself , she looks comfortable and confident which is always a successful part in fashion photography. It could do with a tighter crop just so the doors don't look as slanted as they look as it stands. The dog looks ace on this shoot and i think she just brings a pleasant bit of humour to each shot.
My Final Image
Here is the choice for my final image for the spring fashion brief. I feel i have suitable sourced information regarding spring 2013 fashion trends i have also styled the model appropriately and executed a clean , sharp playful image that would fit well within a fashion magazine. I think it would fit well in most fashion magazines but if i was to show them as a series ( photo story) it would fit even better in publications such as Marie Claire and Vogue. I think this would benefit being printed as a full page piece in full colour.
